Fruit Smoothies

Some people don't think of fruit smoothies as raw food recipes, but they can be. Unfortunately most juice bars or smoothie shops include dairy, sherbet, or refined sugar in their smoothies. If you drink them at a shop, be sure to ask if they have any that are 100% fruit. Then ask if they add any pasteurized juices to them...they usually do.

We love making fruit smoothies at home because they are so easy to make, are really nutritious, and the kids love trying out new recipes. Plus making them at home allows us to control what is going into them (fresh organic produce) and they are much less expensive to make than buy!

There are smoothie and green shake recipes all over this site, but hopefully this page will lead you to a lot of them!

Smoothies are some of our favorite raw food recipes!

Use the recipes you find as guidelines more than rules. And decide for yourself if you want to include frozen fruit in your smoothies (some raw foodists don't eat frozen foods).

Tips

Sometimes cutting unusual fruits keeps people from making smoothies at home. My opinion is if you don't want to hassel with slicing a pineapple (I don't) buy it fresh and pre-sliced. Yes, it is more expensive but if it gets your family eating fresh pinepple, maybe it is worth it? We buy freshly sliced pineapple at Costco which helps with the expense. The other idea is to just keep things simple. Toss in a banana, some grapes and an apple. You don't have to spend a lot of time cutting tropical fruits to have a tasty smoothie.

Tips to give your fruit smoothies a creamy texture

People never believe me until they try it, but adding 1/2 or a whole avocado to a smoothie really makes it creamy. We even add avocado to chocolate shakes!
Another trick is to add raw nuts into the smoothie, especially cashews. They make it very creamy. In fact nuts are the base of all raw cream sauces. Just be sure no one has any nut allergies!

Tips for boosting smoothie nutrition

Fruit smoothies are loaded with vitamins and living enzymes with the fresh fruit, but if you ever want to boost that, toss in a handful of living sprouts. Sprouts are loaded with nutrients and as long as you don't add too many they taste great tossed in.

Any type of greens can be added to smoothies, again as long as you don't add too much. That is how we get our kids to eat kale!

Another thing to try is coconut butter or coconut oil. Coconut butter can be found at health food stores, it is delicious. Sometimes we spread it on top of raw desserts like icing. Coconuts are loaded with nutrition and taste amazing added to smoothies!
